The way our learners learn or is it the education system seem to perpetuate dependancy syndrome. I interpreted the said picture as a nurturing process that goes on at UJ. After an intensive interaction with your publication, that made me scrutinize the state and impact of our education system. It encourages reproduction or regurgitation of information, hence you find educated people unable to be innovative, or use their innovative ideas to make means to an end.
One of the things that led to xenophobic attacks in SA is that most foreigners are adequately skilled by their basic education system, thus enabling them to explore and tab into opportunities that most South Africans take for granted or undermine. Unlike most foreign education systems, ours produces job seekers as opposed to job creators.
Pity our education is now used for political gains, preying on the ignorance of the uneducated by introducing an Outcomes Based Approach, that is not adequately implemented, to ensure that learners go through their basic education years unskilled, illiterate but yet certificated. Uneducated parents appplaud and ululate to the learner's Pass, which is just a fluke and not authentic.
Education should empower citizens with skills for life that will be beneficial to the advancement of both the society and economic growth, not those who are certificated or psuedo qualified but can't read, write or even make use of available resources to improve their socio-economic status.South Africa is wealthy, but citizen are living in adverse poverty and dying paupers.
